# Planetary Geologic Mapping: the Vesta Snowman Geospatial Dataset
## Alessandro Frigeri1, Katrin Stephan2, Roland Wagner2
__1Istituto di Astrofisica e Planetologia Spaziali (IAPS), Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Rome, Italy__ \
__2German Aerospace Center - DLR, Berlin, Germany__
This package contain the dataset for the geologic mapping of a region of asteroid Vesta named 'The Snowman'.
The dataset includes a QGUS project, and has been tested on __QGIS version 3.34.2__.
GIS data lauers include data from the NASA/Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres:
* NASA/Dawn/FC: image mosaic basemaps
* NASA/Dawn/FC: topographic basemap
* NASA/Dawn/FC: color map (RBG)
* NASA/Dawn/VIR: spectral indexes for band center and depths for the pyroxene absorption bands
## The geographic context
![The Snowman](https://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/web/assets/pictures/vesta_dawn_snowman_2f2_365891958_detail.jpg "The Snowman"){height=600px}
The snowman is a set of three craters, nicknamed "Snowman" by the NASA/Dawn Framing Camera's team members. TIt is located in the northern hemisphere of Vesta and the two larger craters are about 40 kilometers across.
This dataset includes basemaps and data to do develop a geologic mapping project over the _Snowman_ region of Vesta.
The __coordinate reference system (CRS)__ for this data set is the [IAU_2015:20000041](https://spatialreference.org/ref/iau_2015/200000410/), indicating a [simple cylindrical projection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equirectangular_projection) over a sphere with 255 km of radius.
## Geologic Mapping Training Material
Within the dataset, an exercise on geologic mapping is provided as contacts, linear and punctual features, as well as style file for coding the geologic units. The geologic mapping exercise is based upon the map published in Williams et al., 2014 (see reference below).
